CEO Pay vs Revenue
How much do NZ charities spend on leadership relative to their size? This analysis compares key management personnel (KMP) compensation to total revenue, identifying charities where executive pay represents a notably high or low share of income.
How to interpret this data
A high KMP pay ratio does not necessarily indicate poor governance. Small charities with professional staff (e.g. health clinics, legal centres) may have high ratios simply because their revenue is modest relative to the cost of employing skilled professionals. Universities and large NGOs typically have lower ratios due to scale. Context matters.

Methodology & Limitations
- KMP compensation is extracted from annual reports via AI (Claude Haiku). Some figures are aggregate totals for leadership teams rather than individual pay.
- Revenue figures are from the latest available charity financial return filed with Charities Services.
- Charities with no extractable compensation data are excluded. Coverage: top ~1,100 charities by revenue.
- A high ratio may reflect small charity scale, not excessive pay. Compare within sector for meaningful benchmarks.
- Some charities report aggregate KMP pay without naming individuals. Where a CEO is not separately identified, only total KMP pay is shown.
