Acceleration of Minginui Nursery

Funding to scale up Minginui Nursery production of forestry grade native seedlings and boost community development. Minginui Nursery is owned by Ngati Whare Holdings, and already employed and trained local people. Ngati Whare has developed a successful approach to getting local people into full-time permanent work through offering wrap-around services, like social and health services. It grows forest-grade podocarp species – rimu, totara, matai, kahikatea, miro – and kauri. It already had a large order book for manuka, kanuka and other pioneer species. Funding will allow the nursery to grow from 20,000 seedlings per year to 1 million seedlings per year.

Youth Employment Plus - Rotorua

This regionally-led initiative in the Bay of Plenty that will create a Community of Impact ‘for Rotorua, by Rotorua eco-systems’ that supports and empowers young people into education, training and employment. Imagine, Believe, Achieve Employment Training Programme

The Imagine, Believe, Achieve Employment Training Programme is a three phase 12 month programme, utilisng the successful Tauranga Boxing Academy programme. The first phase is 13 weeks intensive tailored learning, second phase is 13 weeks providing work experience and education and the last phase is 6 months monitored employment (or alternative education pathways) experiences – with employer/employee input. The programme is based on Whare Tapa Wha, and a ‘wrap around’ pastoral support throughout training, work readiness and employment. Tikanga and Te Reo Maori are woven in the fibre of the programme.

The project will see 30 new roles with 8 apprenticeships, upskilling up to 58 people per annum over 3 years. The project is based in Edgecumbe targeting new recruits, school students and current team members.

The initiatives supporting the Kawerau Pathways to Work plan include an industry-based Cadetship that creates cadetship opportunities for rangatahi NEETS in rangatahi-friendly local workplaces, led by a Cadetship Coordinator. It will also incorporate an Industry Training Support Service, which provides additional pastoral care and support to rangatahi NEETS undertaking industry training, led by a Training Support Coordinator.

It provided practical training in the forest and study towards NZQA Level 2, 3, and 4 forestry qualifications. This project is complete and cost $205,624.In an area where there has been little opportunity for local rangatahi, many took the opportunity to gain qualifications, plan for a future, and earn money. Tane Mahuta also set up a women's crew – the Hine-ahu-one forestry crew. Outputs of the projectAll 20 of the trainees successfully graduated the course. Of those, 18 were offered employment within the sector. The other 2 decided to continue forestry training
