To fence, shape, and plant drainage channels to address the significant bank erosion and slumping of drains following the 2022/23 floods and heavy rainfall, ensuring effective operation of the land drainage network to clear surface water, reducing potential damage to pasture and crops, and reducing the overall sediment release into the Piako and Waihou river systems.

Te Hua Ake - Creating Opportunities

To prepare whānau with appropriate training, mentoring and qualifications, and connect them with employment, enterprise and upskilling opportunities with iwi and hapu related businesses in priority sectors for the region.

Whakatutuki Work Ready Programme

Whakatutuki Work Ready consists of a 6-month intensive programme delivered out of Benneydale for rangatahi aged 18-24 who are NEET from Benneydale, Waimiha, Ongarue and Te Kuiti. The programme will be delivered to 4 cohorts of 15 rangatahi each (60 in total) over 2 years and will include: tikanga and history of Ngāti Rereahu and Maniapoto, development of personalised Workplace Training Plan, soft and work-readiness skills training, support with developing a healthy lifestyle tools, life skills including management of stress and emotions, as well as CV writing and job application training and support. Participants will also complete a 3-week Health and Safety training, Toi Toi Māori Leadership training, Chemical Handling and Storage training, Grow Safe Basic training, Quad Bike course and Chainsaw course. Work experience will be completed as part of the programme, for which DOC and Kiwi Rail have offered placements. Ongoing pastoral care will be provided for at least 5 months post-programme. The Recipient will liaise with Te Kuiti Community House, a Whanau Ora provider, to provide individualised support to participants as appropriate and according to each individual case.The programme will be delivered from a new training hub in Benenydale at the Mangapeehi Railway Station complex established by Kiwi Rail. Kiwi Rail will also provide co-funding (mostly in-kind) and facilitate training components.

Ko Waipā te Awa – Restoration Project

Funding will be to support the fencing for the first 16.6km of the Waipa River. There will be close to 40ha of whenua retired with the fencing and native plantings along the awa.

The Recipient will establish and deliver a service that combines and coordinates skills training, employment and pastoral support for local rangatahi and whanau in the Waitomo, Te Kuiti and Otorohanga areas {the Project). The aim of the Project is to support local people into meaningful employment and economic development opportunities in the region. Initially, the two focus sectors of the Project will be building and construction, and agriculture.

WRC Riparian Restoration Project

Funding to extend current Waikato Regional Council planting programmes that integrate trees into the existing farming landscape using predominantly native species for riparian, gully and wetland restoration projects. Waikato Regional Council provides advice, planning and funding to promote appropriate land use and deliver tree planting at site, property and sub-catchment scales.The project targets planting sites of up to 20 ha in area. Total planting is predicted to be 200 ha and 712,000 plants across the programme. Planting to be funded under this project is focused on high priority riparian and erosion prone gully areas.

Manaia River Catchment Restoration Project

The Manaia River sub catchment restoration project is to restore the mauri of the Manaia River. A key feature of this project is to restore the catchment through planting erosion prone and riparian areas and re-create some 20ha freshwater wetlands. Not only will this assist in improving water quality and reducing sediment entering the Manaia harbour (and Hauraki Gulf Marine Park), those wetlands have the potential to create cottage industry opportunities through the establishment of a nursery, mara rongoa and specific harakeke planting for traditional use.This project involves:•

The core initiative delivered, Licence to Work and Pathways Connect, consists of a 10-week programme targeting up to 100 rangatahi NEETs in the Taupō District.
